Ira Isaacs: Obscenity or Art? American producer/director Ira Isaacs is facing a court battle over selling extreme videos that are deemed to be obscene under American law. His titles include scat (shitting) and bestiality content, both subjects which are normally well beyond what would be allowed in the US or UK. American obscenity law is quite similar to that in the UK. Rather than define "obscenity", it is left to a jury to decide whether something is obscene or not. However, the US differs from Britain in having freedom of speech guaranteed under the constitution. Isaacs is fighting his case as a freedom of speech one rather than obscenity. He claims that his work is artistic, as it designed to shock and create discussion, rather than turn people on. "I see myself as a shock artist that has sex in some of the films," he says. As an artist, his work would be protected from suppression. The outcome of this case will be watched with interest, as victory for Isaacs would open the way for more extreme forms of video to be legalised in the United States. Source: AVN |
