Pornstars Party at the Troxy

Memorable moments from The UK Adult Film and TV Awards 2007
Do you think Cathy Barry was ever in the Brownies? It might explain why, just before Cathy accepted her Lifetime Achievement gong at the UK Adult Film and TV Awards, host Ben Dover made her recite the Brownie Promise - she was almost word perfect too.
As the Bristol babe received her well-deserved standing ovation for many years' contribution to the industry, she gave the famous Brownie salute to her fans gathered in the Troxy, which surely was just about all of us.
Thursday's ceremony was full of priceless moments like this, ensuring that the 2007 event will stay on in the memory long after the tuxedos come back from the dry-cleaners and get hung up in the wardrobe for another year. The sumptuous 1930s art-deco building in East London was an inspired choice of location, its huge, stylish interior providing lots of space for porn stars to play.
And while the Troxy offered the style, the beautifully-attired adult performers provided the glamour. None more so than the gorgeous Isabel Ice, decked out in shimmering silver and beaming from ear to ear as she climbed the stairs to the podium to pick up the BGAFD Female Performer award. This meant more to her than any of the nominations she's received in the past, she explained, because it's voted for by the fans.
'Climbing the stairs' wasn't an option for Isabel's erstwhile partner-in-crime. Daisy Rock had sprained her ankle several days previously at the Erotica show at Olympia, but still found an ingenious way to reach the platform - she asked a big burly helper to carry her there. He had to do so twice, as Daisy claimed her awards for Best Pay Per View TV Series and Performer in a Girl/Girl scene, both for Bound, Shagged and Gagged.
Other winners who made more than one visit to the stage included Kendo, whose Bondage Thoughts received recognition for Lighting, Editing and Packaging in addition to the prestigious Best Film award and whose speeches modestly gave everyone else on his team much of the credit for the film's success.
Anna Span also picked up a handful of the elegant glass trophies, and revealed that her inspiration for the movie
Hug A Hoodie
, for which she was named Best Director, came from fancying the roughneck boys on the council estate where she grew up. Anna also accepted a trophy on behalf of Hug a Hoodie's star Vince Velvet, who was Best Male Newcomer - she revealed that he had gone back to Australia after only a brief spell on stud duties in Britain, but promised to track him down.
This was the first year that television categories had been included within the remit of the Awards, and the astonished big winner here was Rio Lee. No sooner had she sat down after accompanying her Sex Station colleagues to pick up the gong for Free To View Channel of the Year, than she was on her feet twice more for further recognition, as Free To View Presenter of the Year and then as one half of the Best Online Scene. Looking scrumptious in her dazzling pink outfit, Rio seemed genuinely stunned and delighted with her triumphs.
Bluebird Films' Paul Chaplin also made multiple trips to the podium, with a bevy of glamorous beauties in tow. "Wait until you see the film", he proclaimed, as Murder Mystery Weekend was given the nod for Best Soundtrack, and three contract girls also took trophies for their work on Bluebird titles, each one no doubt equally eagerly-awaited.
And Lolly Badcock, not normally a girl to be upstaged by anyone, let members of the band The Streets share her moment in the spotlight as they noisily handed her the award she received for Xperimental. "We're all winners tonight", she declared as proceedings drew to a close, and Ben Dover claimed he hadn't the faintest idea who The Streets were.
Eventually Ben and his charming co-host Kirstyn reached the last of the thirty-seven awards, and cheers went up as Keiran Lee and Carmel Moore were named Best Actor and Actress respectively, selections with which no-one could disagree. The sizeable Troxy audience then headed en masse for the bar and dance floor, where Mark Shaw entertained with a medley of Then Jericho hits.
And unless we were mistaken, beneath the music a faint voice with a distinctive West Country accent could be distantly heard practising: "I promise to do my best, to do my duty to keep the Brownie law…"
